Photos that tell stories
On her knees in an art gallery, a startled woman is caught peering too closely at a painting, flames and sparks of molten metal light up the darkness inside a steel mill, a chubby toddler harasses his baby sister in the Boboli Gardens in Florence, a young skateboarder pauses in mid ascent as he scales a steep concrete incline, a weary Madison Avenue butcher rests against his counter at the end of a long day -- these moments, and many more, are the subjects of the photos I have taken over the years in many places and many situations. As you will see as you view my website, I tried to capture the humor, pathos, and beauty all around us. My goal was to save that special moment in time.
The stories behind the photos
The photo itself is not the only story. What went on behind the scenes? How did I get photos of Italian fishermen catching anchovies the same way they did hundreds of years ago? Why did it take 3 trips to Dulles Airport to get the appropriate photos of the Concorde for the book In The Driver's Seat? How and why did I create a second escalator in the National Gallery of Art?
Kid's Books
My wife Nancy and I wrote 9 children's books using my photographs as illustrations. We are including 8 of them here so that you can read and show them to your children. Even if you have no children, I know you will enjoy the photographs. Scroll to the bottom of this HOME page to find the children's books.
